Celebrate as Sangria turns Fifty

In addition to Sangria being the drink of the Summer, it is also my signature drink. The fruity, flavorful drink has its origins in Spain but was truly introduced to this country at the World Fair in 1964 so Sangria is celebrating the big 5-0 this year. Known as the signature cocktail of all  Vintage Shaun events, the rich drink makes people shop and have fun.   Also, Sangria doesn't have to  be costly, you can use a boxed wine instead of a pricey   vintage and frozen or canned fruit  if you can't get your hand on fresh fruit . Check out some of my favorite sangria recipes I've created over the years and try one a day in celebration of Sangria's golden anniversary.

Peach and Prosecco Sangria

1 Bottle of chilled  White Wine (750 ml) I prefer a dry flavor such as Riesling and or you can also use a Pinot Grigio
2 White Peaches, peeled and sliced
2 White Nectarines peeled and sliced
2 Pears peeled, cored and sliced
2 shots of Triple Sec
2 shots of Peach Schnapps or Brandy
2 Mint Leaves  diced
1 bottle of  chilled Prosecco, Cava or Sparkling wine

Directions

  • In a bowl combine fruit with 1 shot of Triple Sec, 1 shot of schnapps. Set aside and let marinade over night.
  • In a large bowl or pitcher pour wine and leftover triple sec and schnapps, place marinated fruit,  mint leaves and  mix for 2-3 minutes. Pour 1 cup of Proesecco, Cava or sparkling wine, mix again.
  • Serve over ice to guest in wine glasses. Place sparkling wine in refrigerator and only pour into sangria mixture when serving to guest to avoid sparkling going flat.
